There is No Secret to Business Strategy

"It's dangerous business going out of your door. You step into the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

There is no secret business strategy that guarantees organizational effectiveness.

It's simply a matter of knowing who you are, why you exist, where you're going, and how you're going to get there.

It's about being present enough to know where your feet are planted in relation to the path you're on and to the destination you're headed toward. The answers already exist in your organization; finding them is simply a matter of mining for them in the chaos – chaos that's often loud enough to distract us from what matters most.

What is an Effective Business Strategy?

A great business strategy is both destination and journey. One is knowing and believing in an unknown, but, ultimately, it's the journey that shapes us. While we need a true north to determine the path, it is in how the path is walked that provides the most substance.

The best strategies aren't rigid roadmaps; they're dynamic guides that require flexibility to adapt to the ever-shifting terrain and the obstacles; and knowing what opportunities to take and leave behind.

Focus is at the Heart of a Good Business Strategy

It comes down to focus.

We can't be so focused on what we wish to accomplish that we divert our awareness from the path we must take to get there.

When Jon Krakauer decided to climb to the Summit of Everest, his preparation was strenuous, including multiple climbs through dangerous terrain in order to acclimatize. These climbs were emotionally and physically demanding; they required significant financial and logistical investment. He likened this to paying a "toll" for safe passage.

Our daily and weekly work is our toll – succeeding today, planning for tomorrow. Pay it often enough, and it stops feeling like a toll and starts acting as growth.

Building Resilience in Your Business Journey

Running and working in a business is a daily and weekly cadence, starting with each employee taking ownership for the betterment of the team.

The team, made up of unique individuals with diverse talents and personalities, then starts moving forward as one. Identifying obstacles. Planning to overcome them. Celebrating the small wins. This isn't about reaching a Summit; it's about strengthening the people and systems that get us there.

Every step develops culture, improves systems, and fosters sustainable growth.

Turning Pains of the Path into a Strong Business Strategy

  • ➡️ Our feet are callused — We've made mistakes
  • ➡️ Our backs are sore from carrying the weight — We've handled relationship poorly
  • ➡️ The chaotic nature of the terrain has slowed us down — We've allowed the pains to wear on us
  • ➡️ The weather has beaten us raw — We've not been in control

And, yet, our eyes are open with the fresh delight of the experiences lived and sights seen. We've learned from the past, we're focused on the present, planning for what's ahead. We're moving more efficiently, intentionally pursuing relationships, and growing more effectively.

Resilient business strategy is forged in these moments — by embracing challenges, staying focused, and growing intentionally.
